Link Diversity – why you need it and how to get it!
February 1st, 2012We have had a growing number of questions regarding Link Diversity and what it means in SEO ranking terms for us, therefore, I would like to hand over this post to Jeff (you may know from our Customer Service & Help Desk) as he has some great personal experience to share with you on this subject
Link Diversity – Why you need it and how to get it!
When it comes to SEO there are two primary areas of concern: on-page and off-page optimization.
- On Page SEO deals with everything related to your site structure and the keywords within that structure.
- It is great that many blog platforms handle a lot of this for you these days.
- Off Page SEO mainly relates to link building.
- In the past few months we have seen a change in the way links are counted and how we need to get the most from our linking strategy.
As I am focusing on Link Diversity, we are only going to focus on Off Page SEO:
When we are building our backlinks, the general rule is that the more diverse Class-C Domain links that are driving traffic to your site, the better. This is why Unique Article Wizard has been so popular and is so effective as UAW provides links from a very large, highly diverse group of sites that vary from category to category. The need for this type of link diversity has not changed.
Diverse backlinking to your site is only ½ of the link diversity puzzle that you must consider when developing an Off Page SEO strategy. The last part of the strategy does not relate to any network you are using or the number of sites linking to your site, rather it concerns where you point those links to for your website! (home page, inner pages etc.)
What do we know?
- Beside providing Higher Quality Articles to readers, the search engines continue to tell us they want to see natural growth and natural linking patterns
So, what can you do to stay within the guidelines and not draw negative attention to your site?
–> Landing Page Link Diversity!
- It does not look natural to the search engine for all your links to be going to your home page.
- It does not even look natural for all your links to be going to 2 or 3 pages.
- It certainly does not look natural for two keywords within the same article to be going to one page of your site.
Therefore you need to develop a plan to link to as many pages within your site as possible!
Unique Article Wizard enables you to have up to 2 links in your resource box and 2 contextual links in the body of your article. These 4 links are not designed to all go to your home page. They are designed to enable you to diversify your links to various landing pages within your site. As a matter of fact, UAW will not allow you to use the links to go to the same page because they understand the benefit of link diversity to your success.
Here is a personal example of how important Link Diversity is and how it affected my rankings:
Recently, I had a site that has been on the 3rd page of Google for 6 months, crummy… and no matter what I did I could not get any higher for the search terms I was targeting
What did I do?
- First I used MajesticSEO to analysis my links and found that 96% of my links were going to one page…my home page.
- I immediately realized this was not natural looking to Google and decided to test out an idea…
- I decided to use UAW to link all future articles to blog posts within my site.
- I removed all the home page links in past articles and replaced them with deep links into my site.
- I used the resource box creator within the step by step wizard to generate over 1000 resource boxes with different anchor text keywords.
- I then started a slow drip feed the articles using UAW.
What happened next?
- Within 30 days I had made it to Page 2 …
- Just recently made it to Page 1 for a very competitive targeted keyword!
What do I believe caused this increase in rankings?
The only changes I had made were:
- the URL’s within my articles
- diversifying the anchor text to include LSI keywords
So how do I apply it today to my Article Marketing today?
- I use one home page link and one deep link within the resource box
- 2 additional contextual links (deep-inner page links) within the article body
- The ratio used is 3 deep link –> 1 home page link
- My test results showed me that this is a much better linking pattern for the search engines to see.
- It is more natural and provides an added benefit of getting more visitors to my site because I have varied my anchor text keywords.
In closing:
Landing page link diversity is one of the most important aspects of your article marketing plan and should not be overlooked. Yes you need a large number of linking sites from various Class-C domains (UAW provides this), but you also need to create a natural linking pattern with every article you create!
